Memories of the Class of 2021

This is Danebank Year 7: Invite your friends to enrol

  • Year 7 2022: A few places are still available in Year 7 2022. This video gives a taste of why our girls love Danebank Senior School and the many opportunities they have at our school. Invite your friends and family to view and to contact our Registrar for further information.

This is why you should join us in Year 3 2022

  • Year 3 2022: Due to a high demand for entrance into Danebank, we have opened an additional stream for Year 3 in 2022. There are still some places available, so do encourage your friends and family to discover Danebank for their daughter.

Year 2 celebrate Friday with a High Tea

Year 2 have a Friday Fun day every week and this week we had a High Tea party together.

Q and A with Alumna Dr Kerry Chant

Earlier this year at our Founder's Day celebration, we were honoured to welcome back to Danebank our alumna, Dr Kerry Chant, NSW Woman of the Year 2021. Dr Chant graduated from Danebank in 1980 as Dux, after also serving as School Captain that year. Principal Dr Emma Burgess presented Dr Chant with the Edith Roseby Ball Award for Compassion for her tireless work and leadership during the Covid pandemic and her service to the people of New South Wales.

Instead of making a speech, Dr Chant chose to respond to questions from girls and staff, giving some excellent advice and an insight into her life and career. We thought these questions would be of interest to our community. We will share a series of these on our distance portal, this is the first.

Celebrating the BIG & Small Wins

Reflecting on our 'win' BIG or small helps our brains and bodies to fill up on positive emotions. You might like to use this worksheet to reflect on the 'wins' for term 3.

RUOK Day 2021: Junior School

Thursday 9th September 2021 is national R U OK? Day – and a reminder that on every day of the year we can check-in with our friends and family and open up the conversation about how they are really going.

R U Ok has put together four steps for having a conversation with a friend or family member:

  1. Ask R U OK?
  2. Listen without judgement
  3. Encourage action to get support
  4. Check in again to see how they are.

RUOK Day 2021: Senior School

R U OK? Day

Thursday 9 September is the national day of action where we are reminded that every day is the day to ask "are you OK?" if someone in your world seems to be struggling with life's ups and downs.

R U OK? wants to remind us that we don't need to wait until someone is visibly distressed or in crisis to check in and ask if they are ok. If you feel like something is not quite the same with someone you know, or there is something going on in their life, or you notice a change in what they're doing or saying- trust your gut instinct and take the time to ask them "are you OK?".

Wellness Day

We marked 13 August with a day devoted to Wellness Learning Day. It was a proactive and positive initiative designed to boost wellbeing, support learning engagement and lift the spirits of our community. We encouraged our girls to stay away from their screens as much as possible on that day.

Wellbeing and Learning Grids of Activities were designed for the day, with girls from P-12 encouraged to take part. There were opportunities for brain exercises, practicing gratitude, physical activity and finding a place of calm. Activities suggested on the wellbeing grid were designed to align with the Visible Wellbeing framework - an evidence-based approach to wellbeing and learning that Danebank is implementing across the whole school and which aims to provide students with a psychological toolkit to feel and function at their best.

School Counselling Team

The Danebank School Counselling Team is committed to supporting all students’ wellbeing during this uncertain and challenging time. We will continue to offer support and counselling to our students and their families and to find new and creative ways to provide wellbeing information and strategies to students more generally.

Kimochis Feeling Colouring Book

The Junior School Counsellors are big fans of Kimochis. They are Japanese feeling characters that allow children of all ages to recognise, name and express how they are feeling.

This resource is a range of blank feeling characters that you can invite your daughter to draw on to express how she is feeling, there is no right or wrong. During Distance Learning as a family you might also like to use this resource together as a way to communicate how everyone is going.

Year 10 Japanese get cooking!

Book Week zooms into Danebank!

Last Wednesday, students in years 7 to 10 were invited into the creative worlds of two authors – Sue Whiting and Kat Colmer – as part of Book Week 2021.

Sue Whiting

Sue Whiting spoke to girls in Years 7 and 8 about generating narrative ideas through embellishing life experiences in order to create an authentic story.  She also encouraged students to keep a process diary  - a place where they could write freely without overthinking, developing confidence in their own voice.   Sue urged the girls to be curious and ask questions, as well as becoming voracious readers  - reading being a vital pathway to writing.

Learning Together

Year 7 are currently exploring a unit on "Living Things" and have created collages differentiating between living and non-living things. The next stage of the investigation will then move on to classify different types of objects and organisms into those two categories.

Virtual Year Group debates

Over two weeks, the debating coaches and staff hosted Virtual Year Group debates with our Danebank's debaters while the Archdale competition was on hold. Year 7 vs Year 8 debated the topic "That Tik Tok stars are bad role models" and the Year 9 vs Year 10 topic was "That the royals are no longer relevant". This debate had slightly different rules to the usual debates we participate in as the teams were allowed to use slideshow presentations and some even included Tik Tok dances.

Oliver Hoare
  • Australian Athletics
  • Event: 1500m

We are excited to celebrate with our PD/H/PE teacher, Mrs Kate Hoare, and her son, Oliver Hoare, as he makes his Olympic debut for Australia in Tokyo this August. Oliver attributes his success in athletics to his family, saying: “I started running because of my family's love of sport”, explaining that as a child he swam and did cross country while juggling other sports.

We hope you will cheer for Oliver in his 1500m track event.

UPDATE: Not only did Ollie Hoare run a fantastic race during his heat, but placed 4th in his Semi-Final run and made it all the way through to the OLYMPIC FINAL on Thursday 5 August 2021.

Oliver performed outstandingly in what was the FASTEST EVER 1500m Olympic Final. Congratulations Ollie, we are so proud!

Cyber Safe Families

With young people spending more time online in the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increased risk of our young people encountering online predators.

For over eight years, ySafe has been delivering cyber safety training to schools across the country. They teach students how to spot a predator online and what they can do to respond to situations where they are being targeted.

To continue this education when it’s needed most, ySafe are offering a free session about online predators to share with families.

Free sessions for Primary and Secondary.
