      Welcome

      Welcome

      Welcome

Music, Dance, Arts and Drama are essential to educating the whole child. Aware of the vast research that acknowledges the many benefits to learning, cognitive function and wellbeing that these pursuits bring, Danebank offers enriching opportunities for our students to explore, discover passions and pursue their talents in the performing arts.

Our programs focus on learning and a technical refinement of skills through a broad curriculum taught by outstanding teachers as well as instrumental, dance arts and drama specialists.

We also build collective ensemble skills, involving listening, reacting and teamwork, through our varied ensemble opportunities. And we offer many performance opportunities which see the students striving for excellence and achieving their goals. These pursuits also afford great opportunities for social interaction, and can become a wonderful outlet for stress relief and enjoyment.

Praise God with trumpets and all kinds of harps. Praise him with tambourines and dancing, with stringed instruments and woodwinds. Praise God with cymbals, with clashing cymbals. - Psalm 150:3-5

We utilise Danebank's holistic approach to learning from P-12 within our programs and seek to meet students at their level, build their skills and extend them to new levels by advancement through the different ensembles and programs which also include extension opportunities for high achieving performers through our RISE Academy program.

We also offer performance for leisure opportunities which can meet the needs of those who enjoy performing and making performance art with less pressure.

All enrolment and general information for our Co-Curricular Performing Arts programs can be found on this portal. Any questions can be directed to the Director of Performing Arts P-12, Ms Emily Maguire [email protected]

Years 3, 4 and 5 Instrumental Program (IP)

Years 3, 4 and 5 Instrumental Program (IP)

All Year 3, 4 and 5 students participate in the Junior Instrumental Program within the scheduled classroom music time.

Learning an instrument has proven benefits to the brain. When playing an instrument nearly all areas of the brain become engaged benefitting visual, auditory, motor and cognitive functioning. There are direct correlations between learning an instrument and developing language skills. Working memory is improved, ability to focus and decode, even behaviour and social/emotional function improves.

Neuro research tells us that although these benefits can be enjoyed at any age, the most benefit comes from learning an instrument when you are young. At Danebank we make sure every child has this opportunity through our Years 3, 4 and 5 Instrumental Program (IP).

We hope that these young musicians find a love for music and continue pursuing it in their future years at Danebank, but whether these students go on to become musicians or not, they are able to apply these great benefits to all areas of learning.

If you have any questions about the IP program, please contact Director of Performing Arts P-12, Ms Emily Maguire at [email protected]

      Year 3

IP lessons will take place on Wednesdays during the school day.  In Term 1, Year 3 students will have the opportunity to trial different instruments. Our instrumental tutors will meet the students, assess their suitability for each instrument, and introduce them to the instruments and their sounds.

At the end of Term 1, the tutors will provide instrument allocation recommendations. These recommendations are based on the student's physical and breathing capabilities, as well as instrument availability, while also considering the child's instrument preference order. Please note that we cannot guarantee a student's first preference, and parental input is not permitted in the final instrument allocation decision.

We understand that parents and students may have a particular preference in mind, and we remind parents that in addition to this program, parents have the opportunity to enrol their child to learn private lessons on any instrument of their choice through our Private Instrumental and Vocal Lessons program.

Students will attend one instrumental music lesson each week, alongside their usual classroom music lesson. A range of expert tutors will guide their development on their instruments in small group settings. Students will be asked to complete weekly practice/homework on their instruments and an end of year performance will be arranged. Parents will also receive feedback about their daughters development on then instrument through the biannual school reports.

      Year 4

IP lessons will take place on Wednesdays during the school day. Year 4 students will be re-allocated their instrument from the Year 3 program in Week 1 of Term 1. Students will continue working on this instrument throughout Year 4.

As part of the scheduled school day, students will attend one instrumental music lesson on alternating weeks, alongside their usual classroom music lesson. A range of expert tutors will guide their development on their instruments in small group settings. On the other alternating week, students will attend a large group ensemble (either Training Concert Band or Training String Orchestra) where they will build ensemble skills such as listening, staying in time, refining tone and working towards ensemble repertoire.

Students will be asked to complete weekly practice on their instruments and an end of year performance will be arranged. Parents will also receive feedback about their daughters development on then instrument through the biannual school reports.

      Year 5

IP lessons will take place on Tuesdays during the school day. Year 5 students will continue on with their instrument study from Years 3 and 4* but will now be challenged and extended through more advanced solo and ensemble initiatives.

Streamed Chamber groupings will see students explore a range of repertoire with other children achieving at the same level. There will also be the introduction of related and extended instruments. e.g. flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, etc.

*Under special circumstances a change of instrument will be considered but not guaranteed. Students who change instruments at this stage will return to a beginner model as outlined in the Year 3 program.

Danebank offers diverse and rich opportunities for students who have a passion to learn an instrument or who are already on their journey as instrumentalists. All students in Years 3, 4 and 5 are afforded the opportunity to learn an instrument as part of their classroom music Instrumental Program. Within this program students will begin ensemble playing through the Training Band and Training Strings ensembles. From there advancement can be made through our Junior Band to Senior Band, and our Junior String Orchestras to Senior String Orchestra. Students who are taking private instrumental lessons outside of the Years 3, 4 and 5 Instrumental Program may also join these ensembles. These programs are designed to move students smoothly through a pedagogical program that develops skills at their level and propels them to reach for the next level.

          Instrument Rental

On limited occasions there may be instruments available for rent for students in this ensemble. However, it is important to note that the rental instruments provided by the school are beginner quality and not suited to this standard of playing. Occasionally when a student is without their instrument for a long period of time due to repair, for instance, they may like to explore rental options within the school. Please see our INSTRUMENTAL HIRE PAGE for more information about costs and rental protocols.

          Strings Scholarship Program

Danebank is currently seeking to grow participation on the instruments of Viola and Double Bass. We encourage any interested student who already has experience on violin to think about adding viola to their skills set. And we also encourage any interested student, who already has experience on violin or cello, to consider taking up the Double Bass. The school will offer free instrument rental for up to 1 year as well as bringing in an instrument specialist initially and then occasionally, to give the student some specialist assistance and pull-out lessons within the strings rehearsal time.

Students who accept this opportunity would do so on the understanding that if they prove to enjoy and do well at the instrument they would need to embark in private lessons to ensure ongoing success in this option, please contact Director of Performing Arts P-12, Ms Emily Maguire at [email protected]

Day to day maintenance and up keep

Parents are responsible for day to day upkeep of the instrument including replacing broken strings and reeds. (New strings can usually be fitted for you at the music store when you purchase the new string. Alternatively, you can bring the newly purchased string and the instrument to your music tutor for fitting.

Instruments should be kept in cool, dry areas and frequent practice and playing of the instrument ensures they stay working in good condition. Never leave an instrument next to a heating source or in a hot car for any period of time. Do not allow other family members who are not learning the instrument to play with or have a go of the instrument.

          Lost Instrument

Parents are responsible for keeping track of the rented instrument. Lost instruments will incur a full replacement cost even if the instrument is lost at school.

          Damage and servicing the instruments

If an instrument needs service or repair while in the care of a student, it remains the renter's responsibility to take it to an ‘approved repairer’. The first step in this process is to contact the Director of Performing Arts P-12, Ms Emily Maguire to discuss the issue and find out where to take it. Please note that under no circumstances is an instrument to be taken to a repairer not approved by Ms Maguire, or to have repairs attempted by family members at home. Any damage caused to an instrument through these errors will incur further costs and possible replacement costs by the family.

The school will cover the cost of servicing and minor damages that are incurred through general wear and tear of using and playing an instrument. Any significant damage caused by accidents or ill treatment will be charged to the family.

At the end of each year instruments are collected by the school and serviced and cleaned over the Christmas break. All rental instruments are to be returned to one of the music staff by the end of Week 7, Term 4.

          End of Year Instrument Return

All rented instruments are to be returned for annual servicing by Friday 27 November 2026 (Week 7, Term 4).

          Extended rental periods

In some limited cases, we are able to allow families to continue renting the instrument over the Christmas break. This will incur another rental fee as indicated on the fees list above (to be charged in the following term 1 school fees) and a commitment from the family to drop the instrument off for service to an approved repairer at another convenient time.

Please note that extended rental over the Christmas Holidays will only be approved for students who are continuing lessons in 2025 and if the instrument is approved by the tutor and Director of Co-Curricular Performing Arts, to be in good condition.

          Private Instrumental And Vocal Lessons

'I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.' Plato

Alongside classroom music and co-curricular ensembles, Danebank also offers private music lessons to students who wish to learn to sing or play an instrument. Staffed by highly qualified instrumental and vocal specialists, this program is offered to any beginning students, or to students who are already learning outside of school but would like the convenience and cost effectiveness of learning on campus during the school day.

Private music lessons occur as pull-out, half hour lessons during the school day. The students are scheduled on a rotating schedule so they are not always missing the same class. We do not offer permanent, fixed time slots for private lessons. Lessons occur in our purpose built, music practice rooms in the PAC building.

Enrolments for this program are due by 1 February. Once enrolments are processed the music tutors will contact each family with a schedule and we aim to have all lessons up and running by week 3. Students and families are committed to a full semester’s charge for lessons once enrolled.

NB: Late enrolments are also welcomed but may not be processed in time to start lessons in Week 3. In these cases, lessons will start later and billing will be adjusted.

While we encourage students to purchase and maintain their own instruments, in some cases instruments may be rented from the school.

All enrolment and general information for our Co-Curricular Performing Arts programs can be found on this portal. Any questions can be directed to the Director of Performing Arts P-12, Ms Emily Maguire [email protected]

          Costs, Commitments and Withdrawals

          Costs

Private instrumental lessons at Danebank incur a fee of $54 + GST per half hour lesson.

Students attend weekly lessons, 18 in Semester One and 17 in Semester Two, as follows:

          • Term 1: Weeks 3 – 10 (8 lessons)
          • Term 2: Weeks 1 – 10 (10 lessons)
          • Term 3: Weeks 1 – 10 (10 lessons)
          • Term 4: Weeks 1 – 7 (7 lessons)

Parents are charged for only 16 lessons in Semester 1 and provided 2 complimentary lessons to complete the full 18 weeks of lessons. As there are many interruptions in the school calendar that may result in a student missing a lesson through no fault of their own (eg excursions, carnivals), these 2 free lessons provide a buffer without impacting cost for parents or requiring tutors to provide makeup lessons. Please note that these complimentary lessons offset interruptions that are caused directly by the school calendar at no fault of the student. We do not refund or makeup lessons for general student absences (illness, forgot) or lessons that are missed due to outside family commitments/appointments. If there are no interruptions during the semester, then the student simply pays for 16 lessons and receives 2 free lessons. The same model applies in Semester 2 with parents paying for 15 of the 17 lessons offered.

          Commitment

Once enrolment and timetables are confirmed students are committed to, and will be charged for, a full semester of lessons. If a student withdraws before the semester is concluded, charges will still be incurred until the end of the semester. Semester 1 costs will be billed each semester along with school fees in term 2, and semester charges will be billed along with school fees in term 4.

          Withdrawal

Withdrawal for the following semester must be done at the end of semester 1 (end of term 2) via email to the Director of Performing Arts P-12, Ms Emily Maguire

                Audition Requirements

To ensure a smooth audition process, all students should prepare the following:

                1. Vocal: ONE of the provided selections from the show, based on the character(s) you are auditioning for. All songs will need to be sung with the performance (backing) track for your audition.

                2. Drama: A short monologue from the show based on the character(s) you are auditioning for.

Resources: Please find the song lists, backing tracks and monologues available in this folder, as well as on the sign up form: AUDITION MATERIALS JR MUSICAL .

                Note on Callbacks

The production team may request certain students to attend a "callback" to sing and/or read.

                - Not all students will be required for a callback; this does not indicate that a student is no longer under consideration.

                - Many roles are cast based on the initial audition alone.

                - A callback for a specific role does not guarantee casting in that particular part.

                Expectations & Commitment

                Teamwork and Philosophy:

Performance is a collaborative art. We expect students to audition with the intention of participating in the production regardless of the role assigned. Our philosophy focuses on teamwork; therefore, withdrawing after the cast list is released is disruptive to the ensemble and may impact eligibility for future Danebank productions.

                Production Fee

A fee of $130 applies to all successful applicants. This assists in offsetting costs for costuming, professional sets, scripts, and licensing. This fee also includes a commemorative 2026 cast T-shirt. The production fee will be added to your Semester 1 school fees.

NB. Students who participated in the Dance Troupe in 2025 will have automatic entry into the 2026 Troupe and will not need to re-audition. These students should skip the audition date and show up to the first rehearsal. Once students have been notified of their offered position in the troupe, the teacher will give some instructions about appropriate attire for ongoing lessons. Students who accept a position in the Dance Troupe are required to make a commitment to weekly rehearsals and performances as they arise during the school year. Students are required to maintain a 90% attendance rate in order to be included in eisteddfods and performance opportunities.
